Explore the San Juan Mountains of Southwestern Colorado during the height of Fall Autumn color with Landscape Photographers Jonathan Steele and Gary Gray. We'll be working in the San Juan Mountains near Ridgway, Ouray and Telluride, Colorado as well as along the Million Dollar Highway when the San Juan Mountains are at their most beautiful Autumn Fall color. This workshop is suitable for any level of photographer from amateur to professional.

Additional Information

The base itinerary for the workshop will be as follows.

Monday, October 3rd: Attendee arrival day, plan to meet with the workshop group after 6 PM in the Ridgway/Ouray Colorado area (location to be determined) for a meet and greet.

Tuesday, October 4th: Up before sunrise, the group will rendezvous and then proceed to a preselected sunrise photography location in the San Juan Mountains. We'll shoot through late morning, take a lunch break and visit a new location for the afternoon and sunset photography.

Wednesday, October 5th: Up before sunrise, the group will rendezvous and then proceed to a preselected sunrise photography location. We'll shoot through late morning, take a lunch break and visit a new location for the afternoon and sunset photography.

Thursday, October 6th: Final day of workshop, Up before sunrise, the group will rendezvous and then proceed to a preselected sunrise photography location. We'll shoot through late morning, take a lunch break and visit a new location for the afternoon and sunset photography. Workshop ends at sunset.

Bring your laptop computer and we'll review/critique photos as time and location allows, either in the field or at a yet to be determined meeting time & place.

Accommodations

Lodging and meals not provided (we have a list of recommendations)

We provide transportation on location, however, you are free to use your own personal vehicle if you desire.

There are airports in Denver, Colorado Springs, Montrose and Telluride for those who'd like to fly in from elsewhere.

Preferred airport destination is Montrose Regional Airport, for those who need to ride with us.

There is a 50% deposit due at time of signup and the remaining balance is due in full by September 1st.

This workshop will go rain, shine or snow, as this time of year can be very dynamic with rapidly changing weather systems. No two years are quite the same.

We must have 4 signups by the cutoff date of August 2nd (two months prior to workshop) or the workshop will be cancelled and refunds issued to those who signed up.

Once we've confirmed the workshop is on, final payment is due by no later then September 1st.

No refunds will be issued after the cutoff date of August 2nd unless it is a result of Gray Photography cancelling the workshop.

Physical Difficulty

Strenuous hiking will not be part of this workshop. Many of the locations we visit will be close to the road. Attendees should be in good health and capable of working outdoors in bad weather and at high altitude. You'll be asked to sign a waiver to participate.


What to Bring

Digital SLR Camera
Wide-angle to telephoto lenses. I usually cover from 17mm-500mm with my lenses but 17-300mm will work also. Note that for star photography you will need a wide angle lense that opens up to f4 or better.
Sturdy Tripod
Camera remote control
Polarizing filter
Memory cards
Headlamp
Extra camera batteries, make sure your headlamp has fresh batteries also.
Laptop (not required but useful for image editing and storage)
Camera manual
Sturdy walking shoes or hiking boots
Rain gear
Warm Jacket, autumn temps can go into the 40's at night, weather permitting we will be going out at night for star photography including star trails and Milky Way shots.

About Your Hosts:
Jonathan Steele photographs New England's most beautiful landscapes. In his travels he has covered areas throughout New England including the Connecticut Coast line, Acadia National Park, The White Mountains of New Hampshire and other New England locations. Whether it is by hiking, climbing or kayaking he is always in search of new images from perspectives that most people will never personally see, or may never just take the time to stop and notice.

Jonathan is an award winning published photographer who has studied with The New York Institute of Photography as well with some of the world's top photographers and photography instructors who have shot or written for The National Geographic Society, Audubon, The Sierra Club, National Parks, Outdoor Photographer, Popular Photography and other nationally and internationally recognized publications. In addition to being published in the London Based Landscape Photography Magazine he is also a member of the New England Photography Guild where he is one of a small a group of photographers that has come together to present to you the best of New England through their photography.

Though he is primarily New England based, Jonathan has also spent time capturing images in other areas of the country including the Gulf Coast of Florida, the Mountains of Colorado and the Catskills of New York.
Gary Gray is a Colorado based Landscape & Wildlife photographer who founded his photography workshop business in 2006 after retiring from The Wall Street Journal.

An internationally published writer and photographer Gary is also the founder of North American Nature, Wildlife & Landscape Photographers Association.

Gary is also an expert print maker. Gary teaches workshops, hosts photographic tours and does private photography tutoring. His photographic base of operations is Red Feather Lakes, Colorado.
